ABC Newslinks: The Current Events Resource for Macintosh¿
Read Me and Trouble Shooting
Thank you for installing ABC Newslinks. This file contains tips that can help ABC Newslinks run more smoothly on your computer.
Minimum System Requirements:
System 7.1 or later
4.5MB Free RAM
Double-speed CD-ROM drive (300K per second transfer rate)
256 colors
640x480 Monitor Resolution
QuickTime¿ 2.1 (included on the ABC Newslinks disk)
Sound Manager 3.1 (included on the ABC Newslinks disk)
Apple¿ CD-ROM software 5.1.7 or later (included on the ABC Newslinks disk)
Getting Started
If you need help getting started with ABC Newslinks, please consult the User's Guide included with the CD, or choose "ABC Newslinks Help..." from the Help menu in the upper right corner of the menu bar after launching ABC Newslinks. The Help menu is indicated with a "?" symbol.
To our System 7.5.2 Users
If you have a Power Macintosh¬ 7200, Power Macintosh 7500, Power Macintosh 8500, Power Macintosh 9500, Powerbook¬ 5300, Powerbook Duo¬ 2300, or Powerbook 190, you may have System 7.5.2 installed on your computer. If you do, we recommend that you upgrade to System 7.5.3 before using our Wonderlink feature. Upgrading to System 7.5.3 will not delete your preferences or any files that are not part of the standard system installation. To upgrade to 7.5.3, simply open the folder called "7.5 update 2.0" and double-click on the "installer" icon. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the upgrading process.
Wonderlink
You have the option of using "Wonderlink," your online link to getting daily news updates from ABC News. To use this optional feature, you need to install America Online by double clicking on the "Install AOL 2.7 w/ Browser" icon on the CD. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation and registration before using Wonderlink.
Wonderlink: Sample ABC News Update
If you are not registered with America Online, and would like to see a sample ABC News Update, choose "ABC News Archive" menu item from the Wonderlink menu. Select the file called "Example" and click "Open." The sample ABC News Update will open, and automatically appear on the globe and in the Find List. Click the Newslinks button in each story to access related data on the CD-ROM.
You can delete existing stories, or add your own pins to the ABC News Update and save it as a regular map pin list. However, the existing stories in the ABC News Update are read-only, and cannot be edited.
Connecting and downloading from America Online
If you are experiencing problems connecting to America Online using Wonderlink, we recommend that the first and second phone numbers you choose to log onto America Online be the same. Since ABC Newslinks references only the first phone number, this setup will ensure that you will not have problems connecting to America Online using Wonderlink, if you can connect to America Online using the AOL software. Also check to make sure that your modem is connected to the modem port, and not the printer port on your Macintosh. The modem port is indicated by a phone handset symbol, and the printer port is indicated by a printer symbol. If problems persist, we recommend re-installing the America Online software.
Note: If you would like to speed up the download time for your ABC News Updates, turn the music off by choosing "Stop Music" from the sound menu, and choose "Never" in the "Display Picons" popup in the Preferences. The Preferences window can be opened by choosing "Preferences..." from the Edit menu.
If you experience any problems installing, connecting to, or downloading files from America Online, please call the AOL Tech Support at 1-800-827-3338.
Printing and copy/pasting text
If you would like to print or copy/paste text from ABC Newslinks: The Current Events Resource, you can access the text in the "Newslinks Text" folder in the ABC Newslinks CD. Please read the "ReadMe" file in the "Newslinks Text" directory for details.
Video and sound playback
We recommend that you turn off Virtual Memory to maximize the quality of playback of sounds and videos in ABC Newslinks. To turn Virtual Memory off, follow the steps below:
1. Open the "Memory" Control Panel in the "Control Panels" Folder in the "System Folder" on your hard disk.
2. Turn Virtual Memory off by clicking on the "off" button under the words "Virtual Memory."
3. Restart your Macintosh, and launch ABC Newslinks - enjoy!
Do you need to install Apple¿ CD-ROM software 5.2.7?
If you use an Apple CD-ROM, ABC Newslinks requires Apple CD-ROM software 5.1.7 or later. If the Apple CD-ROM software installed on your Macintosh does not meet this requirement, you will receive an alert telling you that your version of the Apple CD-ROM software is too old. If you receive this alert, please follow the steps below to install Apple CD-ROM 5.2.7.
1. Click "Quit" at the alert.
2. Open your ABC Newslinks CD
3. Open the "CD-ROM Software" folder on the CD.
4. Double-click the "Installer" icon.
5. Click "Install".
6. Restart your Macintosh.
7. Launch ABC Newslinks - enjoy!
Installing Apple Guide
ABC Newslinks has two versions of Online Help: one for Apple Guide users, and one for non-Apple Guide users. The Apple Guide version of the Help file takes advantage of Apple Guide technology, to take your through the answer to your question step-by-step on your screen. To install Apple Guide, simply open the "For System Folder" folder on the CD, and open the "Apple Guide" folder. Select the "7.0/7.1 Apple Guide Enabler" and "Apple Guide" files and drag-drop them onto your System Folder in your hard drive. The two files will automatically be placed in the correct folders within your System Folder. Restart your machine, and launch ABC Newslinks. Select "ABC Newslinks Help..." from the Help menu, and you will launch the Apple Guide version of Online Help. Enjoy!
If an ABC News Update download is interrupted
If your ABC News Update download transfer is interrupted for any reason, there may be portions of the file on your hard drive that you must delete before attempting to download the file again. To delete the incomplete file, choose the "ABC News Archive..." menu item in the Wonderlink menu. Incomplete files will appear in the dialog with a filename beginning with the character ~. Select the file and click the "Delete" button. You are now ready to download the file again.
Do you have After Dark¿ 3.0 installed on you Macintosh?
After Dark 3.0 may affect sound and music play in ABC Newslinks. If you have After Dark 3.0 installed on your computer, we recommend that you turn it off while using ABC Newslinks.
Printer memory problems?
If you have an 8 megabyte Macintosh and are running System 7.5.2, or you have many extensions installed, your computer may run out of memory when printing. Check to see if background printing is on by looking at your printer settings in the Chooser Control Panel. If background printing is turned on, turning it off will free up memory needed to complete the printing process.
